10 of the most common questions about periods

WHAT IS A PERIOD AND WHY DO WE HAVE THEM?

A period is an incredible natural and normal process, when a woman bleeds from her vagina for a few days, once a month. This happens when an egg was not fertilised, so the womb “cleans” itself from the now unwanted tissue and cells. It’s as simple as that.

WHAT DOES A PERIOD FEEL LIKE?

The likelihood of you feeling your period flow out of your body is unlikely. It’s not a powerful gush of fluid, but a super calm flow over the course of a few days. When you have your first period however, you may notice your underwear feels wet, simply because you perhaps were not wearing a period pad at that time.

DOES HAVING YOUR PERIOD SMELL?
Like all bodily fluids - urine, sweat etc - there will be a smell if not cleaned. Therefore it’s vital to have clean sanitary pads on standby during your period and to wash regularly. Easy-peasy.

Also take out the trash where you disposed of your pads, because again, just like ANYTHING that stays in a bin for too long, be it a banana peel to a cheese sandwich - smells will eventually occur.

DOES HAVING YOUR PERIOD HURT?
No, your actual period won’t hurt. But the menstrual process may be a bit touchy-feely.

Some girls and women get cramps, headaches or other symptoms during their periods that may be uncomfortable. Remember, since your uterus doesn’t have tiny hands to wipe itself clean, it contracts and relaxes to shed its lining. It’s very normal, and the cramps won’t last forever.

If you’re not a fan of aches and pains, our Gift Wellness Products are made with natural ingredients to help your body feel more relaxed, thus allowing your period to flow even more naturally.

I GOT MY PERIOD AND I HAVEN’T TOLD MY MOM YET. IT’S REALLY HARD FOR ME TO TALK ABOUT THINGS LIKE THIS. I HAVE SO MANY QUESTIONS THOUGH, WHAT SHOULD I DO?

You’re not alone - promise. So many girls face the same issue. Remember, your mom is probably the best person to ask about your period. She’s no stranger to periods and may just provide you with a secret to tackle camps, stigma and what not too.
If you feel you can’t talk to your mom, look towards a trusted aunt, friend’s mom, older sister or a woman you admire for guidance.

Our Gift Wellness Advice Cards also come with loads of advice for you, mom, dad and others. These cards are a great read and super educational too.

IS IT OK TO HAVE A BATH / SHOWER WHEN I HAVE PERIOD?

Of course! You’re most certainly not dying or bleeding from a stab wound. Periods are normal. So have a lovely long bath or shower, it will help you feel fresh and ready to tackle the day with loads of confidence too.

Our Gift Wellness Cleansing Bars are all the rage, made from natural products, great for periods, bodies, faces, spots and girls.

IS THERE ANYTHING I WON’T BE ABLE TO DO WHEN I HAVE MY PERIOD?
Your period doesn’t have to stop you from doing things you usually do. You can still go to school, help at home, see your friends, play sports and do all the things you’d normally do.

WILL ANYONE, LIKE BOYS OR MY MOM, NOTICE WHEN I HAVE MY PERIOD?

No — not unless you tell them! If they ask you, it’s totally up to you to share or not.  Our Gift Wellness Advice Cards are fabulous to help inform and educate those around you.

HOW MUCH BLOOD DO I LOSE DURING MY PERIOD?

Most girls lose about a ¼ cup of menstrual fluid during their periods (mostly in the first few days). Of course this number varies from girl to girl. When in doubt though, remember our Gift Wellness Pads are super-duper absorbent and won’t leak at all.

WHEN WILL I STOP HAVING MY PERIOD FOR GOOD?
Typically we can wave goodbye to your period friend when we hit menopause, around our late 40s or early 50s. And when our period retires, so does our ability to have babies. Menopause is a whole new phase and adventure waiting for us down the line.
